Associated General Contractors of America
The Associated General Contractors of America is the nation's oldest and largest commercial construction association. Our members build everything except single family homes.
As the construction association, we represent over 27,000 construction and construction-related businesses across the United States. One of our members' top concerns is critical shortage of available, qualified men and women to hire for high-paying construction careers. Despite the fact construction pays, on average, over $30 an hour, nearly 80 percent of our member firms report having a hard time finding workers to hire. Too few Americans are exposed to the fact that construction ought to be on the menu of career options worth considering. One key reason for that is the once-robust vocational educational system that was in place in schools across the country has been dismantled. This sends a strong signal to students and their families that construction should be a job of last resort, instead of a prime career opporunity. That is why our association's top priority is working with any group, elected official, association or company that is willing to expand career and technical education and training opportunities. We have already successfully lobbied Congress to expand career and technical training opportunities and to increase investments in these kinds of programs. But we still need more funding and more opportunities for young Americans to be exposed to, and prepared for, high-quality construction careers.
